See where your money goes
Review a full month, confirm its categories and understand where your money went.
Review a full month in three steps: choose the month, confirm its categories, then read the result.
Step 1: Choose a complete month
Choose one completed calendar month, with its first and last date.
- Open the date control at the top of Cashflow and choose a month.
- Use the arrows to move backwards or forwards.
Check that all accounts you use for income and spending cover that month and their transactions have arrived. If history is missing, resolve it before treating the totals as a complete month.
Later, you can review a week or fortnight. Change Timeline cadence in Cashflow settings. This changes the timebox, not your transaction dates.
Step 2: Categorise the full month
Review and categorise a transaction · 26 seconds On Dashboard, open a transaction in the Recent transactions widget.
- Check the merchant, amount, date and account.
- Open the category, choose the correct one, then confirm it.
- Start with income, larger spending and repeated merchants, then work through the remaining transactions for your chosen month.
Check your own-account transfers separately; they aren’t ordinary income or spending.
Step 3: Review your Cashflow tracking
Switch to Timeline, open the view control and choose Real tracking only. The control now says Tracking only. Read your chosen month’s column.
- Open the larger spending categories to see the transactions behind their totals.
- Check that the totals include the whole month and all intended accounts. Keep own-account transfers separate from income and spending.
- Identify your largest spending category and state the month’s recorded income, spending and net result. This is a period result, not your available bank balance.
You’re done when the full month is covered, its income and spending categories are reviewed, transfers are treated correctly, and you can explain where your money went. Missing history means the result is still provisional.
Optional booster: auto-approval
For a merchant you regularly put in the same category, create an auto-categorisation rule to reduce repeat reviews.
Open the transaction and choose Set a rule. Check the match and category before selecting Create rule. Existing transactions stay unchanged.
Use this for predictable merchants. Keep checking transactions that could belong in different categories.
